Recap of #RoadtoAsianCup for Team Hong Kong
Hong Kong has made an impressive start to their #RoadtoAsianCup campaign. With new head coach Jorn Andersen being appointed for the Hong Kong National Team, a new style was expected from him but as fans, we didn’t know what to expect. Being drawn with Afghanistan, Cambodia and India in the group stage, qualifying for the Asian Cup is what Hong Kong has set out to do and we couldn’t write a better script than what we have achieved thus far.
So far, we won two games out of two by beating Afghanistan 2-1 and Cambodia 3-0. What we saw from the team was the high-pressing game that Andersen has implemented in the team. With the profile of players that Andersen has selected, you could see younger, more energetic and hard-working players are preferred in the system. Technicality plays a part too and using key players such as Wong Wai, Matt Orr and Sun Ming as focal points have paid dividends. Due to the physicality of our players, we are not going to focus on playing high-balls and having a tall number 9 to play off with like we did in the past.
If you look at the depth of our squad, we have got hungry, young players looking to prove a point and experience players to give confidence and resilience to the team.
What we have seen in the last two matches are resilience, work-ethic and energy that Andersen have implemented in the team and if we can get at least a point against India on June 14th, then we will most definite qualify for the Asian Cup in the summer.
We currently have three Zyphr athletes that are in the squad including Wai Wong who scored the first goal against Afghanistan and MOTM for Hong Kong, defender Leung Kwun Chung and Winger Fernando Pedreira.
Please do continue to support the Hong Kong National Team and our athletes as they will be playing their final group stage game against India on June 14th 11pm HKT. Worldwide free live streaming is available at channel RTHK32.
